Endodontics (root canal treatment)

In teeth with deep carious lesions (caries profunda), the nerve complex is inflamed. This causes severe pain. If the inflammation is in the nerve canal, the root needs to be treated. Every tooth has its own anatomy and number of canals, which can often only be pinpointed with the help of a microscope or digital volume tomography. Access is prepared via the crown of the tooth. The canals have to be cleaned and flushed out.

The cleaning is carried out using rotating instruments and the canals are flushed with a rinsing solution. Bacteria-free canals must be sealed (filled).

In most cases, this is done using a root canal cement and thermoplastic gutta-percha (a rubber-like material).
